Last night was the second CNN Fit Nation Solution summit in New York City, a night to offer answers, instead of just placing blame, for the obesity crisis in America. Practicing neurosurgeon and CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta has a formula for success: Eat healthy + move more = live healthy.

Rachel Ray, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Jillian Michaels, Eric Shanteau

Gupta moderated a discussion with TV host and cookbook author, Rachael Ray; life coach and fitness trainer from NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” Jillian Michaels; and Olympic swimmer Eric Shanteau. Together they developed tips on how to motivate America to exercise and eat healthier foods.

Rachael Ray’s Top Tips:
1. Cook with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
2. Use whole-wheat pasta
3. Get some fish in you
4. Load your pasta with veggies
5. Have fun!

Jillian Michaels’ Top Tips:
1. Put yourself first
2. Make nutrition a priority
3. Exercise
4. Make mental health a priority
5. Stop and smell the roses

Eric Shanteau’s Top Tips:
1. Exercise with a purpose
2. Try new workouts
3. Get outdoors
4. Have a workout partner
5. Listen to music

Gupta reminds us all that small changes reap big results. Losing just 10 percent of your weight can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease. Also, regular exercise will reduce type 2 diabetes, keep your bones stronger as you age. But don’t stress if you can’t hike a mountain or go jogging. You will see a difference by just increasing the amount you walk by 30 minutes each day. The key is to eat healthy and get moving. No magic pill needed. This simple formula really does work.

One of the best aspects of the CNN Fit Nation Solution Summit was hearing real life weight-loss success stories from CNN iReporters in the audience. You can read their stories here. They inspired all of us (even gave Rachael Ray “goosebumps”) with their determination and fight to live healthier lives.

Now I want to hear from you! Have you had weight loss success? What motivates you? Share your top tips below!

Loved the article! It made me think! Time to start with baby steps.

It’s very interesting that Rachel Ray was involved, yet didn’t talk about MonaVie, which was featured on her show as their favorite “Super Drink”. Ads are popping up all over the internet linking her name with Acai weight loss.

MonaVie seems to be popping up everywhere. People in my office are selling it, there are invitations to tastings posted at the mailbox in my apartment.

Is there any truth to the sales hype that it cures diabetes, helps control cholesterol, increases memory, and helps with weight loss?

Is there a cure for asthma let alone also supposedly upcoming cure for AIDS? An individual that I am chatting with online is passing himself off as a biochemist that has come up with these discoveries.

What has worked for me in staying relatively fit is a mixture of indoor (gym) and outdoor activities (bike rides and hikes). The gym can get boring very quick when it comes to cardio workouts. I use a mixture of treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike and group exercise to mix up each workout week. There are plenty of group exercises that are fun for example salsa, hip hop and advanced step classes since they all involve creating a routine that exercises both the body and the mind. I by far am not a dancer but it’s a fun challenge anyway. The main goal is to do something fun and not be in a repetitive rut.

As for food I’ve incorporated a lot more wheat based products (pasta, bread) into my diet along with more green leafy vegetables (spinach). I’m also trying to eat less meat (mainly beef).

What motivates me is seeing women in my group classes who are in their 40’s and 50’s outlasting me sometimes! Plus I assumed these ladies were in their 30’s (like me) only to find out one of them had a 26 year old son! Health is the fountain of youth that no cream or makeup can ever create.

I think the article does a good job of addressing the initial steps to physical fitness. Diet, however also plays a critical role. After watching America’s Killer Diet special, my belief that the Food Administration in this country does need to provide greater oversight in development of nutritional options was confirmed.

There is a hypocrisy that exists in our nation. One that appears to promote being health conscious and health food options, but one that simultaneously increases the burden on the consumer by offering healthy (yes), but cost prohibitive choices. During these economic times and for at least the previous decade, it has not only been more convenient to eat fast or “junk food”; it has been more economical. I am constantly faced with this dilemma while shopping for healthy food options and I am in an upper-middle class income group. This hypocrisy automatically further disadvantages persons in lower socio-economic statuses from availing themselves of the healthier food choices, which would also help to decrease the rampant health issues present among this particular population.

Kellogg, Kraft and others in the food industry need to find a way to offer affordable healthy food options; options at similar prices points as their less healthy counterparts. Until the Food Administration or some branch of government addresses this injustice, their efforts at promoting healthier options are really just lip service to an issue that is crippling the health of our nation.
